It is common for foreign materials to fall into a surrounding module’s housing area prior to device assembly. These foreign materials, such as loose screws, can fall into the device from a neighboring module. This debris is typically small and of various colors, making detection extremely difficult using a traditional gray-scale camera. Furthermore, flash or fins (extra material on the edges of molded plastic parts) can be overlooked in the molding process and sent to production where they can cause obstruction during the assembly process.

The use of 3D vision (that operates independent of color) for pre-assembly insertion check ensures that module mounting areas are free of debris, screws (down to 1mm or smaller), and flash that can cause disruption during assembly.
